THE FAUX HAIRLINE (SMP style by Marc Allen)
Introduction to Faux Scar Hairlines
Faux Scar Hairlines are an innovative way to enhance the realism of Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) by incorporating the appearance of scars. This method not only adds a touch of individuality but also diverts attention from the SMP itself, making it an effective and stylish addition to your look.
What Are Faux Scar Hairlines?
A faux scar, or false scar, is a deliberate and artistic element added to an SMP treatment to mimic the appearance of a natural scar. This technique has gained popularity within the SMP industry as a means to add character and authenticity to the hairline.
The Evolution of Faux Scar Hairlines
Marc Allen explains that the concept of faux scars isn’t new but has evolved significantly. In his early days as a professional barber, Marc would often incorporate scars into hairstyles for aesthetic purposes. These were typically placed near the edge of the hairline to create a distinctive and stylish look.
As SMP techniques progressed, the addition of scars became a way to create a more natural appearance. A well-placed faux scar can draw attention away from the SMP work, especially if the SMP itself is not perfect. This subtle distraction can prevent the treatment from looking like a “head tattoo” and instead give it a more realistic feel.
Benefits of Faux Scar Hairlines
Distraction from SMP Work
One of the main advantages of incorporating faux scars into your SMP is that it distracts from the SMP work itself. A well-placed scar can make the entire treatment look more natural by breaking up the uniformity of the pigmentation.
Customisable and Reversible
Marc highlights that faux scars are highly customisable. During the multiple sessions of an SMP treatment, you can decide where to place the scars and how many to include. If you later decide that the scar isn’t for you, it can easily be filled in during a subsequent session.
Adds a Touch of Style
For those looking to add a bit of flair to their hairline, faux scars offer a stylish option. They can be designed to suit your personal style and preferences, making your SMP treatment uniquely yours.
How Faux Scar Hairlines Are Created
Consultation and Design
The process begins with a thorough consultation. Marc and his team will discuss your preferences and design a hairline that frames your face perfectly. The faux scars are then pencilled in as part of the initial design, allowing you to see how they will look before the actual pigmentation begins.

Hi Guys, today, we’re talking hairlines and right now I’m going to talk to you about Faux Scar Hairline.
Now, the faux scar is just the flash word for a false scar. There are plenty of people in the SMP industry dropping a few little scars in places. I thought it looked pretty cool. In my early days, coming from a professional barbering background, I would often drop scars into people’s hairstyles. When I was cutting hair, I would often curve it just near the edge of the hairline.
That all look pretty cool, just as a style. Then as we progressed, and started adding scars into the front and behind, it was more of a thing to create a more natural look on somebody. If you’ve got a scar in your SMP and it’s done right, then it draws the attention away from the actual SMP work. Let’s say see somebody with SMP and their scalp micropigmentation work wasn’t very good, you might spot them and go, “That guy’s got a head tattoo”, that’s where the scar comes in quite handy as mentioned because the focus is taken away from the SMP work itself.
When asked “Would you like to have a scar in with your SMP?” some people might feel a little uncomfortable, however, some people naturally have scars that you can’t quite see, but they’re just in their skin. What we can do is we can just pencil them in, leave a little gap and as you get to the end of your scalp micropigmentation session, you’ve got that faux scar style if you want it (we can always fill this in).
Over a multiple-session treatment, you can say, “Okay, I’m going to have a little scar here, maybe two, maybe one over here in the back.” As you go through the treatment process, if you decide it’s not for you, you can always fill them in later as previously mentioned. It’s such a tiny area that one session would fill it in anyway.
What I really like doing is adding the faded hairline that we talked about before with the scar. If I’ve got somebody that wants a scar coming into the front, we’ve got the scar coming through, and you can see it quite distinctively behind the hairline. As it comes through, it’s into the faded hairline and then it just disperses away. That’s my favourite kind of scar work to add in there on somebody. I think that looks really natural, and you can get some amazing great results with it. For those of you who want a little bit of style chucked in, a little bit of something that might throw people’s eyes off, then a faux scar is the way to go.
