When do I need an SMP Top Up (Scalp Micropigmentation)

Do I need to top up my Scalp Micropigmentation?

The video transcript is  below the article at the bottom of the page:

It’s important to note that the timing of a top-up session can vary for each individual. Some people may need a top-up every 1 to 2 years, while others might be able to go longer without needing a touch-up. To determine when you need a top-up, it’s recommended to consult with a qualified SMP practitioner. They can assess the current state of your SMP and provide personalised advice based on your specific situation. This should be apparent regardless of your SMP style, be it Faux Scar style, the skin fade, a natural faded Hairline etc.

Remember that proper aftercare and sun protection can also help extend the longevity of your SMP. If you’re considering a top-up session or have questions about the maintenance of your SMP, it’s best to consult with a professional who specializes in Scalp Micropigmentation.

The need for a SMP top-up session can vary depending on factors such as your skin type, lifestyle, and how well you’ve cared for your SMP-treated scalp. Here are some signs to look for to determine when you might need a SMP top-up session:

  1. Fading: Over time, the pigments used in the SMP procedure can fade due to exposure to sunlight, skin exfoliation, and other environmental factors. If you notice that your SMP is becoming less vibrant and the appearance of hair follicles is diminishing, it might be time for a top-up.
  2. Color Changes: The color of the pigments used in SMP can change slightly over time due to factors like sun exposure and the natural aging of the tattoo. If you notice a significant change in color that makes the SMP less natural-looking, a top-up session can help restore the original color.
  3. Patchiness or Unevenness: If you observe areas on your scalp where the pigmentation has become patchy or uneven, a top-up session can help to create a more consistent and uniform appearance.
  4. Hairline Recession: If you’ve experienced further hair loss since your initial SMP treatment, your hairline may have receded, making the SMP appear less natural. A top-up session can adjust the hairline to match your current hair pattern.
  5. Desired Density: If you want to increase the density of your SMP or make it more pronounced, a top-up session can help achieve the desired level of coverage.
  6. Personal Preference: Some individuals may simply prefer a darker, more defined look for their SMP. If you feel that your current SMP has faded to a point where it’s no longer meeting your aesthetic preferences, a top-up session can help refresh the appearance.

Ultimately, the decision to get a top-up session should be based on your satisfaction with the appearance of your SMP. If you’re noticing fading or changes that you’d like to address, or if you simply want to refresh the overall look, consulting with a qualified SMP practitioner is the best course of action. They can assess your individual situation and recommend a top-up schedule that aligns with your preferences and needs.

Video Transcript:

Hi, guys, and welcome to another video. We’re talking about how to know when you need a top-up session. You’ve had your full treatment, three, four sessions whatever that may be and you get later down the line. How do you personally know if you need a top-up session? Many clients it’s such a variable answer, many clients will come to us maybe a year later, maybe two years later, probably I’d say 70 to 80% of clients will come a year to two years later wanting a top-up session.

Now many of them, they might arrive and they’re still looking as good as the day they left, but just to them they’ve got used to that look that they’ve had created and they just want to add a little bit more or just make sure everything’s in place for the days ahead. They really enjoy the look that they’ve got and they want to just maintain it. Some guys maybe they don’t take care of their SMP so much and the sun might fade it, maybe their diet has something to affect the skin. Everybody’s different so you get so many variables in place. What I’m going to do I’m going to show a couple of examples.

We’ve got one guy who had a treatment with me originally four years ago, and if we see his treatment from four years ago and then he’s come back for a top-up session two years after and we’ve topped him up and then he’s come back another two years later for another top-up session. As you can see, his healed treatment still looks exactly the same as the day he arrived. He’s taking care of it, he’s protected it from the sun and his skin has just held it really well. Does he need a top-up session? Not really, but he wants to maintain it, so we’ve done a little top-up session and off he goes.

The next client, he hasn’t taken care of his SMP. He’s come back two years later after originally having it done four years ago, he had a top-up session then and then he’s come again two years after and seen me recently. I want to show you someone who hasn’t taken care of their SMP, so we can just see on this video we’ve got a few lighter areas. The SMP’s still looking good but it’s just not quite as pinpoint as the previous SMP that I’ve shown you.
If you don’t take care of it, still going to look okay, it just means that you will need a top-up session to get that real pinpoint look moving forward. All right, so there’s two examples for you. Take care of your SMP, it’s going to stay exactly as it is. Don’t take care of it, you’re going to definitely need a top-up, but you’re still going to be looking good, so it ain’t that too much to worry about. All right, thanks for listening. I’ll catch you later.
